Giuseppe Mengoli receiving the first prize at Mahler Competition 2023 from Marina MAHLER and Jakub HRŮŠA

Like a magician, Mengoli constructed the stage scenes of Igor Stravinsky’s 1945 ballet suite The Firebird, The finale, with its storming percussiveness and apotheotic vehemence, was hardly surpassable. Yet, there was no overt display of ego from Giuseppe Mengoli, who managed to shape even the barbarically forceful final scene with hypnotic pulsation.

The young conductor manages to embody his truly original interpretative directions in the sound of the orchestra, without the slightest hesitation, and with a sound palette that seems to be the result of extensive work rather than an emergency situation.

Italian conductor Giuseppe Mengoli is the 1st prize winner of The Mahler Competition 2023.

“A totally convincing performance throughout the rounds with a perfect combination of knowledge of the score and an extraordinarily natural feeling of music...He possesses a strong ability to inspire the musicians and the audience alike through his musical language which speaks directly to everyone’s hearts.”
JAKUB HRŮŠA, Chief Conductor of the Bamberger Symphoniker

The week following his success in Bamberg, Giuseppe was asked to step in to conduct a program including Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben with the Wiener Symphoniker at the Bregenzer Festspiele. In November 2023 Giuseppe returned to the
Bamberger Symphoniker to replace Herbert Blomstedt at very short notice, resulting in a critically acclaimed concert. In February 2024, he worked with the orchestra again for a Bayerische Rundfunk production and returned for various concerts in July 2024. Bachtrack, review of 06 July 2024 wrote about his concert with the Bamberger Symphoniker conducting Stravinsky’s masterpiece:

Like a magician, Mengoli built the scenery for Igor Stravinsky's 1945 ballet suite The Firebird, modeling the fairy tale of the prince with his gestures and whole body. The finale, with its storming percussiveness and apotheotic vehemence, was hardly surpassable. Yet, there was no overt display of ego from Giuseppe Mengoli, who managed to shape even the barbarically forceful final scene with hypnotic pulsation.”

In the 2023/2024 season, Giuseppe made his debut with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, Opéra Marseille, Rotterdam Philharmonic, SWR Symphonieorchester, Bruckner Orchester Linz, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Highlights of the 2024/2025 season include Giuseppe’s debut with Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg, Dresdner Philharmonie, Wiener Kammerorchester, Bremer Philharmoniker, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro RTVE, Bochumer Symphoniker, and returns to the SWR Symphonieorchester, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, and Rotterdam Philharmonic. In Italy he will not only conduct symphonic programs all over the country but also lead performances of Verdi’s opera Un ballo in maschera with Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana at Teatro della Fortuna, Fano and conduct La Sonnambula in Teatro Massimo Palermo.

In 2022/2023, Giuseppe finished his time as Assistant Conductor with Lorenzo Viotti at the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam working with Directors such as Barrie Kosky. During that season, he made his debut with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and soloist Leonard Elschenbroich conducting the world premiere of Willem Jeths’ Cello Concerto No. 2 at the Cello Biennale 2022 and joined the artistic team for the Orchestre National de France’s new production of La Bohème at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées leading all the stage rehearsals.

Mengoli’s conducting career began as a result of his increasingly deep passion and interest in the art of leading, which he explored during his work as a concertmaster in youth and professional orchestras from the age of 16. His limitless curiosity brought him to a vast variety of experiences, including the study of multiple instruments, taking part in theater plays and performing with bandas. He has since then worked as concertmaster and assistant conductor with Oleg Caetani, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph König, and John Axelrod with orchestras like the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, Oslo Opera House, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

In 2018 Giuseppe made his conducting debut with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in Bad Schandau. During this time, he also served as the concertmaster of the GMJO, the Filarmonica Toscanini as well as a tutti violinist in orchestras such as the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

Winner of several international competitions, he completed multiple degrees in violin and chamber music with the distinction "cum laude" and special mention. Alongside the violin Giuseppe also studied percussions, piano, trumpet, jazz and is also a composer and arranger. After finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Orchestra Conducting, he completed his Master's degree at the HfM “Franz Liszt” Weimar with Prof. Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik.
